The Uh-Oh Syndrome: From Intolerance to Inclusion
Program length: 28:00

The Uh-Oh Syndrome: From Intolerance to Inclusion features Dr. Steve Robbins. In this lively program, he introduces the concept of "mental models," explaining where they originate and why people are naturally prone to dismiss things when they fail to fit those models. Steve explains how multiple and redundant messages received through culture lead people to "unintentional intolerance."

Widely known for his thought-provoking stories, humor, and practical application of principles from neurobiology and sociology, Dr. Robbins uses "The Uh-Oh Syndrome" to tackle tough topics in an understandable and non-threating manner. His message is divided into 4 sections:

  1. Mental Models: The Part Culture Plays How experience affects our worldview and creates mental models. How mental models affect our interactions with our world and with others.
  2. Mental Models: The Part Science Plays How the brain conserves energy through the development of cognitive scripts. How the use of scripts affects our relationships and responses.
  3. Unintentional Intolerance How cognitive scripts lead to mindlessness. How mindlessness leaves us vulnerable to unintentionally intolerant actions.
  4. Two Steps to Move From Intolerance to Inclusion How being more mindful - and less mindless - can lead to more effective and productive interactions. How asking "What if?" and entertaining new ideas can open up our minds to more creative and effective problem solving.

In the conclusion, viewers are reminded that diversity equals strength. Since none of us can know everything…the more we include the opinions and ideas of others, the better our organizations will be at innovation and problem solving.

Bonus Footage features stories from Steve that shed further light on some of the video's key topics including: Duct Tape, Eat Your Vegetables, and Mini-Vans. A Q&A Session is also included.
